Human Cloning and
Stem cell research

The ability to manipulate the genes holds both great promise and great fear.

Just as we breed dogs for certain characteristics, such as a gentle companion or a vicious watchdog....

Snarling dog

We could as easily breed certain humans to serve as soldiers or caretakers.

"Persons" in a bowl

Today's big thing is "in vitro" fertilization.

1

petri dish

A collection of eggs are placed in a glass dish.

2

Donor sperm are combined with the eggs.

cells

The fertilized eggs are then encouraged to develop in a nutrient solution.

4

After a period of time, certain of these fertilized cells, based on sex, robustness etc. are selected for implantation.

All of the brothers and sisters are flushed away.

"Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish".

Matthew 18:14

Cloning is a different bowl game.

multiple babies

In "Reproductive cloning" the DNA of the donor cell is isolated and injected into a human egg cell that has had its own DNA removed.

The intent is to create a new individual with the identical characteristics of the donor.

embryo

The little guys (or gals) could be used as an "organ" farm.

An individual could have a clone of himself created as a source of spare parts in case anything should go wrong with the original ones during his or her lifetime.

9 out of 10 clones die in the process.

Stem Cell Research

ball of cells

"Therapeutic cloning uses a body cell instead of a sperm cell in step two above. The process is called "Nuclear Transfer".

The embryo is created for the purpose of harvesting its undifferentiated cells. These cells can then be teased into a variety of stem cell lines.

The little guy (or gal) dies in the harvest.

Stem cells are immature undifferentiated cells that can be coaxed into many specialized cells.

They can be used to replaced cells damaged in accidents, especially cells that don't normally repair themselves such as spinal cord and nerve cells.

But, the end does NOT justify the means!

"Cursed be he that taketh reward to slay an innocent person. And all the people shall say, Amen."

Deuteronomy 27:25

It is wrong, that some should die so that others may live.

There are other ways to obtain stem cells. It may take more research, more time, but human beings do not have to be destroyed to provide cures.
